I HIGHLY recommend the book "The Gift of Fear." We had a technical writer
who was fired at my current company who was very scary. He talked about all
of his guns somewhat regularly. He had mentioned that he was making 2x as a
technical writer with us than as a UPS delivery guy (his preceding job). So
I bought that book and read the chapter on coworkers and firings, and found
out that this guy had exhibited other behavior that indicated he was a risk
for workplace violence... things I never would have suspected might be an
indicator, such as watching when other people clock in/clock out.
Fortunately, he moved on to another job (as a bailiff at the courthouse)
that was much more up his alley, and nothing came of my concern, but it's
better to be too-vigilant than not vigilant enough.
