TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
This is starting to sound to me like another case
of "spineless manager syndrome." Passing on
a supposedly offhand remark by "someone..."
Instead of telling the employee, "I need more
tracking information about your work."
Instead of responding to "we don't know what
she does when she works at home" with, "Don't
worry. I know."
Instead of responding to "how do we know what
she does when she works at home?" with, "the
same way I know what you (or "your employees"
if the remark comes from another manager) do."
If this is just an isolated incident, the 10-minute
sit-down is fine (assuming you can even find out
who the source of this is), but if it is repeated,
then while it is certainly not "harrassment" or any
other legally actionable situation, it is a sign that
"something is wrong" on the management level.
