Thank you, thank you, thank you! This did the trick and my bullets seem
to be staying stable now. I can only hope.
These lists are awesome.

Open the Style pane, click Options at the bottom. Uncheck all of the
"Select formatting to show as styles" check boxes.
Next, right-click the original style, and select Modify and make sure
"Automatically update" is not checked.
After these, you should be able to modify your styles to suit. I hope
this helps.

I have two Word styles - one called Bullet_1 and one called Bullet_2.
As the style names imply, they represent bulleted lists. Bullet_1 does
not have any type of left indent and it has a hanging indent of .25
inches. Bullet_2 was created independent of Bullet 1 (i.e., the Bullet_2
style was NOT based on the Bullet_1 style) and it has a left indent of
0.5 inches with a hanging indent of 0.25 inches.
All was working well in Word land when boom, I opened the document today
and I now have this funky two styles - Bullet_1 + First Line 0" and
Bullet_2 + First Line 0". Say what? Ok, so I thought the first thing
that I would do is the typical Word thing of selecting each style in
the Styles list, selecting all whopping two instances of each style and
then selecting the style I want it to be to change the style. No go -
so, I requested to select all the instances of each funky style through
the Styles list and delete and still a No Go. The style remains in the
styles list, so. . . I painstakingly went through each flipping
paragraph marker in the entire 85+ page document and I cannot find
either of these styles anywhere in the document? What?
And now here's the rub - If I want to apply the correct style, say
Bullet_1 to a particular paragraph, then BOOM, all of a sudden, all of
my Bullet _1 styles are updated to reflect this funky Bullet 1 First
Line 0" style and all my left indents are set to -0.25 and the hanging
indent is cleared (same issue for Bullet_2 with all of them getting
reset to Bullet_2 + First Line 0"). So, I have to select all of the
instances of Bullet_1 through my styles list and then modify the
paragraph format to reset the left indent and hanging indent. This is
getting very, very old and very, very tedious and more than very, very
frustrating and it all started when this funky two styles just
"miraculously" appeared in my Word styles list. I would like to say that
I am pulling my hair out over this one and gnashing my teeth, but I am
bald and toothless already after dealing with Word for the last month on
this project.
I HATE Word and any and all advice is sincerely appreciated.
