I request this out of all my on-site workers.
Sometimes we all get busy and barely have time to come up for air. If *my* boss comes to
me and wants to know what my group is doing (or a particular member of the group), I want
to be able to answer with something other than, "Hmmm.... I don't know but he seems to be
busy". :) With some of my folks, it's easy to see what they are doing. With others who might
not produce as much "measurable" output, it's harder (for instance, someone who does
mostly Customer Support be we are not "officially" CS, so there are no phone logs to verify).
I don't need a novella, just a quick list of "this week I worked on X, Y & Z". I have apologized
to my group for asking for something so micro-manager-like, but no one seems to mind (or at
least they won't admit it, and everyone is pretty good about shooting me an email regularly).
