Based on the fact that you do not even know what the
Windows registry is, do yourself a huge favor and stay
away from it! As they say on TV: "Danger, Will Robinson!!"
The Windows registry manages a bunch of information
that is absolutely essential to the operation of your
system. It is very easy to corrupt the registry if you
do not know *exactly* what you are doing. And if you
corrupt the registry (without having made a backup of
it immediately before you started mucking around in it),
your system will most likely be completely hosed. The
registry is not for the uninitiated.
There are tools that specifically clean up the registry,
but unless you are sure that you know how to restore
the registry if anything goes awry, I'm convinced that
it is much safer to leave well enough alone. Yes, you
might sacrifice some performance, but unless you know
how to handle a restore the dowside risk is just too
great, IMHO.
