Subject: Snow blindness; was, RE: "Good enough"
I collaborate on marketing writing with the marketing guy in my company.
We use an iterative approach and handoff frequently. Usually, I'll look
at the same document three or four times. And when we iterate quickly
(>3 iterations in a day), by the time I get to what is suppose to be a
final pass, I am pretty much snow blind. That is, I often read what I
think should be there rather than what is actually on the page. If I can
walk away from a text for a couple of days, I can see it clearly again.
What do you do to mitigate snow blindness? Do you know of any technique
to shorten cycle times?
Thanks in advance.
Leonard

I have experience exactly the same problem with things I've written, and
the only solution I've found -- other than giving them to someone else
-- is to do exactly what you say you do -- set the item aside for awhile
and then come back to it.
