The official source is your company's legal department. You do not want
any consequences of erroneous trademark notices to fall upon you,
particularly as you are admittedly not an expert in law, nor a lawyer.
If someone brushes you off and says it's not important, "just do
whatever you think is right," then the company has additional problems.
The weirdness in trademarks that you've observed previously results
directly from one lawyer's reading of the pertinent law. Another lawyer
may interpret it differently. The result is the enrichment of lawyers.
