I've worked on teams before where I might describe a member as "not a
good fit" - someone who was totally capable, but there was something
"not right" when it came to the overall team cohesion. These are people
I enjoyed - often friends with outside of work - but the overall team
composition didn't fit well.
In a large company, this is no big deal: they can move to another team
fairly easily. In a small family business, there may only be one team
and if the fit isn't there, they have to let you go.
With a lot of things, yes, you can mentor and coach and otherwise
change. People's personalities - changing that can take lots of
expensive therapy and a long time - not something an employer should
feel responsible for attempting. The best thing for both parties in
that case is to disengage as soon as possible and move on.
