McClelland & Cohen's Real World Adobe Illustrator is a great resource,
too.
As for The Gimp, if you're comfortable with PhotoShop, it's just not
that hard. It does have a learning curve. Certainly, it's more
complicated than Paint.NET, but it's much more robust, too. I've used
both -- just depends what your needs are. Cropping, sizing, and framing,
for instance, Paint.NET is plenty. Layers, cut-outs, any significant
post-processing The Gimp is a much better tool.

I am now in love with Adobe Illustrator for vector art. It can do almost
as much as Photoshop, and honestly, for rendering drawings from scratch,
I find Illustrator much easier to use than a bitmap tool like Photoshop.
I wouldn't attempt Illustrator without working through the Classroom In
A Book, however. (and a drawing tablet doesn't hurt, either).
