A quick google search shows a number of products that claim to be able
to "unformat" a hard drive.
There is an open source program called dban (http://www.dban.org/)that
overwrites the data on a hard drive many times that can be used for some
measure of security, but even the author of the program states
(http://www.dban.org/faq/index.html#n50) you maybe vulnerable if
"Somebody with a lot of time, money, and brains needs to recover your
data."
