Adobe Acrobat versions - what do I need for catalog (indexing)?
Subject:Adobe Acrobat versions - what do I need for catalog (indexing)? From:"Chris Gooch" <Chris -dot- Gooch -at- lightworkdesign -dot- com> To:<techwr-l -at- lists -dot- techwr-l -dot- com> Date:Wed, 3 Dec 2008 11:10:25 -0000
Hi -
I've just been upgraded to Vista and my trusty old
version of Acrobat won't work it seems. Looking at
adobe's web site they've split Acrobat into 3 versions,
'standard', 'pro' and 'pro extended'.
I really only need one feature, the ability to
index multiple PDF files for searching (they used
to call this 'catalog' but no longer it seems).
Adobe's web site is long on marketing drivel, short
on technical detail, and there seem to be a bazillion
new features which have no use whatsoever to me,
so after spending quite a while reading it I'm none
the wiser.
Does anyone know if the standard version will do
what I need? Or will I need pro?
Alternately, since I create the PDFs using open source
software (pdflatex), does anyone know of any free
(or inexpensive) software to do the same job?
(i.e., create a .pdx file for a set of pdfs and
associate that file with each pdf file)?
All I want is to be able to provide users with the
ability to search the set of manuals (they are
all hyperlinked up in any case so searching them
one at a time would be a step backward).
thanks guys,
Chris.
