TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Things have probably changed since the last time I dealt with Robohelp and
VSS, but the solution I worked out with the developers was to generate the
output from Robohelp, and zip it to a single file, then check it in. I'd
check out the file when I worked on it, and then checked in the new zip file
as needed. When they did a build, they checked it out, unzipped to the
designated folder for Robohelp and completed their build.
As I recall, they liked this method because it also significantly reduced
the database capacity needed.

As Will mentioned, you have to be careful about checking multiple files in
and out consistently, but the RoboHelp interface prompts you to do so. Such
workflow policies are essential, especially in multi-author environments.
However, RoboHelp and VSS seem to work together quite nicely if you uphold
such policies.
Very infrequently I've seen RoboHelp get out of sync with VSS. However, I
think regenerating the CPD file locally and then pulling down the latest
files (memory is fuzzy here) fixed the issue.
