I always put in a section titled "About This Document" with various subsections. One of the subsections is "Typographical Conventions" where I explain things the reader may need to know about the fonts and layouts, like the differences between 'notes' and 'warnings.' One subjection gives "Graphical Conventions" where I explain things about the illustrations, like how callouts on the screen captures are related to explanatory notes.
I wouldn't use the word "colophon." Some people will confuse it with anatomical terms and it could become the butt of bad jokes. :-)
