The immediate problem with Excel is that its default setting - General -
changes (as Dan says) various date-like character configurations into a
PARTICULAR set of date-like character configurations. Changing the cell
format for the sheet to "Text", BEFORE inserting data, will stop that
from happening.
But I think the true problem is any of those things happening by default
in the first place.
The gene sequencing error was observed for certain strings of three
letters with one or two numerals (mar1, dec-2, etc.).
But those of us who don't work with genes shouldn't get too complacent:
The same error occurs with certain short strings of numerals separated
by dashes and slashes (1-2, 9/18, etc.). As Kathleen points out, any
database is potentially vulnerable.
