TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
When I 'reply' or 'reply all' to Mike's post (re Gene and the 2x4 of
good sense) I see that Gene's text is gone, and only Mike's tresponse is
there.
I'll paste both below the part that Tbird put in, just for completeness.

Last summer, I commissioned a local wood carver to make me an "Official Technical Writer's 2x4"... I tell people it's for recalcitrant programmers, engineers and other SMEs. Don't know if TSA'll let me have it in my carryon luggage if I have to make an urgent trip to the left coast to adjust your attitude, though <grin>.
