Microsoft is correct on this point.

Another related issue is that sometimes boxes are displayed as selected
or cleared, not with check marks or bullet points, but by shading and
unshading that is understood by the developers but ambiguous for the
naive user. In my experience, complaints to the dev team fall on deaf
ears. They KNOW if a box is selected or not, and cannot see a problem.
But Hapless J. User sees "gray on the sides" vs "gray in the middle" and
does not know which is which.
