There was an article in Technical Communication some years back that
dealt with a study on the readability of different table formats. Ever
since I read that article, I've tried using their suggestions, with
great success. I remember having some of my non-tech com colleagues read
the article and they were quite intrigued by its findings.
I have moved since then and did not keep my back issues to be able to go
through them. If you are an STC member, you should be able to do a
search on tables research and find the article. The bonus, you will also
be able to read the references that the researchers used, to help in
your knowledge of tables.
