Having investigated further, I have the feeling that this tool just
doesn't work on placed objects. Worked fine with a vector object I
drew...
Any ideas how to do it with a placed object?

Subject: Using the free transform tool in Adobe Illustrator
Hi all
I'm using AI CS2 on an XP PC.
I am trying to add perspective to an object. I select the image, then
the Free Transform Tool, then I start to drag the bounding box, then
finally, I press Ctrl-Alt-Shift (as it says in the help).
However, regardless of what I let go of first (the keys or the mouse
button) the object reverts back to its original size.
What am I doing wrong? It's driving me mad! I have searched this and
other forums but no luck.
