As I understand, the original complaint had to do with the offending company
or recruiter asking for the SSN *over e-mail*.

Ameritech (Ma Bell) is one of those companies that require a SSN before you
can apply to them for a job. As a result, I've never been able to apply to
them through a recruiter.

If this is a genuine opportunity, I'd call the person who sent the email and
explain my concerns or I'd respond with everything but my SSN. If they
really
need it, they'll call. Some major corporations do track submissions of
contractor information by SSN.
