Autonumbering in Word is beyond Forlorn Hope -- the solution disappeared
with Steve Hudson, who was working on it in 2006 for a future version
(post-Word 2007). Steve departed cyberspace in late 2007, and is
reportedly enjoying the physical world very much, so don't count on a
solution.
Sensei Steve was also an expert in Master Documents (see http://www.techwr-l.com/articles/general/masterdocs). Fortunately, his
fellow Aussie Warren Lewington is also reputed to be a wiz with them.
You can find Warren on the Word-PC list.
