I realize, upon re-reading, that what I said means that some folks might
use y'all to speak ABOUT a tree stump (which is silly), when what I
meant was talking TO a tree stump (which is also silly).
And Janice, I have many times heard it used when speaking to a single
person. But then, maybe Tennesseans are a bit less careful of their
Southern culture...being perilously close to Yankee territory.

True, but I don't think I've usually heard it used
directly to a singular person. I completely agree
that it can be used for inanimate objects, and that
"all y'all" is the intensifier form.
