Maybe "center of the area defined by the enclosing lines (or borders)? Simplistic, I know, but my mind is temporarily out to lunch!

HI Everyone,
I am trying to find a simple way to refer to the location exactly center of an area, looking below:
------------------------------- outside defining edge of solid area
===================== this is the center of the solid area (or plane, or whatever)
-------------------------------- outside defining edge of solid area
Currently we are using the word 'midpoint' but this is defined as "A point equidistant from the ends of a line or the extremities of a figure" - since this is not strictly true, how would you define this?
