I've been lucky to have worked at only two companies that had this issue. In
the first one (late 90s), there were two factions within the 5 technical
writers: the techies and the I-hope-they-don't-figure-out-we're-not-techies.
The latter group would regularly try to undercut the former group. I
actually fought fire with water... I would point out any of their successes
to the doc manager, and would only point out failures when they were
absolutely necessary. I can't say whether it was successful... we were all
still with the company when it was bought by another company, but I *can*
say that it was a lot of fun! :-)
In the other company, I ticked off a writer early on when I defended myself
from her constant harping. From then on, she was gunning for me. Thankfully,
that job lasted only 7 months, and I am now making 70% more than I was then!
