About $5K? ;-)
Seriously, some companies have career ladders that are used to determine
promotions. It's a pretty tiny ladder with very few promotion opportunities
if it has just Tech Writer, Sr. Tech Writer, and Manager. :-) At Borland
(may she rest in peace,) we managed to create 6 rungs on the ladder, all
below manager. Differentiators were generally various levels of the
following:
- amount of direction required
- level of product knowledge (the writer's assigned product and all
products)
- Involvement in cross-project tasks
- writing/planning skills
- involvement in tech writing industry/orgs/technology
