Anything you use will take forever without an index. Windows has a
background indexing feature. You used to be able to turn it off,
because it annoyingly ran the hard disk all the time. In recent
versions it's subtler, and I think it's on by default.
Another way is Google Desktop, but the problem I had with that was
that its index would fill up so I couldn't find new material. I
haven't tried it recently,so I don't know if they've fixed that.
