I found an Internet telephone provider yesterday you may find useful,
especially if you either have clients in another country or if you
live in another country and want people to be able to contact you
easily by telephone.
For example, calling from a computer with a Spokn account to any phone
in the U.S. is a penny a minute. Rates to phones in other countries
vary, but are the cheapest I have found to date in most if not all
cases. (This is substantially less than Skype, for example).
As with Skype, calls from computer to computer betwen Spokn users are free.
A very interesting feature, though, is that there are access numbers
in about forty countries. People can call you by dialing the closest
access number, then entering your Spken number. They are charged only
for the connection to the access number, and the call to you is free.
Also, you can get a direct line number in any of seven or eight
countries--including in London, in Canada, or in the U.S. These direct
numbers cost a dollar a month if you want one.
There are other features, too. They have downloadable software for
Windows, or you can use any generic SIP softphone software--as I do in
Linux, where I am using an open source client called Twinkle.
So far, the voice quality seems excellent.
They don't offer SMS, by the way--but they have voice messages instead.
I hope this may be of use for some of you folks.
David
