The Technical Communication Program at the University of Michigan
College of Engineering seeks skilled and enthusiastic applicants for
full time Lecturer positions at a variety levels, starting September
1, 2010.
The College of Engineering is committed to the academic excellence of
its student body, with special emphasis on the ability of graduates to
express themselves and their ideas in a professional and highly
successful manner. As such, the Technical Communication Program plays
a significant role in the delivery of a communications curriculum
across the college, with special focus in the first year courses,
laboratories and capstone designs. Technical Communication faculty
deliver communication instruction in the context of engineering
content and engineering project work and integrate technical
communication, teamwork, and ethics within the engineering curricula.
Responsibilities of the Lecturer in Technical Communication include
the design and/or delivery of technical communication course content
for undergraduate courses in the College of Engineering. Lecturers in
this program work in a team teaching environment side-by-side with
engineering faculty in undergraduate courses, coordinating technical
communications content with technical course content. In addition,
Lecturers may design and conduct workshop exercises for technical
communications topics, possibly including teamwork and ethics topics
as appropriate.
Qualified applicants will hold an academic degree field (Ph.D.
preferred) in technical communication or in an allied or may have
significant relevant training and experience (e.g. industrial) in
technical communication or a related field. Excellence in written and
oral communications in English is required, as well as skill and
experience in various technical communication genres. Applicants
should have significant training and experience in the teaching of
writing and demonstrate the ability to work effectively with students
singly and in engineering project teams. Experience with
scientific/engineering content is required, with particular interest
in technical content related to Chemical Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering, Industrial and Operations Engineering, Naval Architecture
and Marine Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, or
Aerospace Engineering. Evidence of leadership in a multidisciplinary
team-based environment is desirable.
