TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I also wish to respectfully disagree. Users who are motivated to figure out
other ways will do so. You should provide the easiest and most consistent
method of doing something and then move on.
Your readers want to know how to do IT. IT should not be 15 different ways
to do IT. IT should be simple and easy.
It's also easier to maintain and localize. One simple way and move on to the
next task.

And I respectfully disagree with you, Kevin. I have NEVER seen a software
user manual constructed in this manner.
Within the Windows OS alone, there are often three or more-sometimes up to
six-ways to do the same thing. Thankfully, they were not all documented in
the *Windows __ User Guide* or both Brian
Livingston<http://www.brianlivingston.com/>and I would have been
enaged in an entirely different profession through the
'90s.
On the contrary, the additional methods-all of which are *secondary* to any
menu-driven GUI-are there solely as a convenience for end users.
