TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
For the majority of positions I have had, HR and the hiring managers did not even know what STC is...especially in lone writer situations. As a matter of fact, the last company I worked for had 6 tech writers and I was the only one remotely interested in STC. I have contributed to hiring decisions, and I would never not interview someone if they were not in STC or had a particular type of degree. I can't see the certification making much of a difference one way or another. Quality and Project Management are not on the same level as tech comm, face it. The jobs are more competitive and higher paid. Seriously, who is going to demand it? Maybe companies with large doc departments where the managers are heavily involved in STC.
