"I'm not an STC member and I owe them nothing, so what moral, ethical, or philosophical principle gives them the right to insert themselves between me and a possible job?"
My point remains. We are not inserting ourselves between you, or anyone else, and a possible job. Certification is an opportunity to IMPROVE your chances of getting a job. It is moral and ethical for you to avail yourself of this opportunity, as it is moral and ethical for STC to offer it.
