I'm going to assume that the problem is in my Acrobat, not Word, because I
get identical PDF results regardless of whether I use Word 2003 or Word
2007.
And I'm definitely *not* going to touch my Acrobat installation -- it was
almost the death of my computer (and me, it felt like) the last time I
tried an uninstall/reinstall.
So I'll just continue to do this manually for now, especially since it's
not only the page numbers that I want to change. And I've started
investigating other PDF solutions. Some would be in lieu of Acrobat, and
others I think can operate on existing PDFs. Those latter are what I'm
going to focus on because I really like the Acrobat joboptions files and
the low-level of control they provide over settings such as image
downsampling, etc.
And although two of my clients (my two newest ones) want Word source (and
wouldn't you know -- one wants 2003 and the other 2007), my other clients
remain ok with FrameMaker, so it's not like it's an every day
frustration/annoyance.
Thanks everyone, and I'll post any solution I come up with.
