Technically, this information is provided by the publisher, not the
author. It's probably there as a subtle hint to submit feedback on the
readability of the chosen typeface.

Some even include the point size and leading (measurement of the
distance from the top of the ascenders with that of the line below).

The geekier publishers use this as an opportunity to introduce new or
esoteric faces, especially if they commissioned the design.

email newsletter from MyFonts.com, which presents interviews with type
designers. Pretty neat.
