Re:ÂKeith Hood's observation about drummers needing a trailer to haul stuff . .
.
Besides my day job (writing heavy construction equipment manuals), I'm alsoÂa
drummer in an oldies group here in metro Atlanta and it's almost to the point of
getting a trailer for my drum kit and other "stuff". For the time being, though,
I manage with my new VW Jetta.
Included areÂmy 1966 blue sparkle Rogers kit (20-inch base drum, Powertone snare
drum, ride tom, and 18-inch floor tom), plus assorted Zildjian cymbals, my drum
"throne", the gig bag with all the cymbal stands and mounting hardware, etc. And
I'm not even a heavy metal power drummer (more like a Ringo or Charlie Watts
style, keeping a good steady beat with good "fills" where needed).
So what are "oldies" (besides me)? Stuff you can pretty much sing in polite
company. I usually place that as 1950's through a good chunk of the 70s, with a
few assorted songs from later on.

I must be doing my weekend gigs in the wrong place. Or else I'm playing the
wrong kind of music!
Living up to the national stereotype, my brother and I play trad Irish music the
odd weekend around a few pubs here in Waterford (South-East Ireland).
But we'd have to do roughly 8 gigs to get the equivalent of $1,000 (â700+).
I guess I'm gonna have to stick to the day job for another while yet :-(

OK, I didn't know if it was public knowledge and didn't want to guess.
Yes, as much of a mobile money drain as a boat is, at least it doesn't eat or
have to get vet treatments. Every kind of work has its overhead. Our overhead is
the cost of trying to maintain current knowledge. The drummer must have a
trailer to carry his gear, we must have a library of software manuals and style
guides. At least we don't usually trip over the style guides.

Peter has posted more than once in the past about his pony rides.
$1000 in a weekend sounds pretty good, but like bands, DJs, etc., there's a
fairly sizable investment. A friend who's into horses says they're an even
bigger money suck than a boat.
