The files are apparently being saved in the same format. And the times I've unhidden things to look for strange characters, I've found nothing out of sorts.
I'm wondering if I've simply run up against Word's limit. I noted that earlier versions of Word seemed to have some hidden limits, and once those were passed the file got corrupted and was impossible to fix. Go past a certain size, or a certain # or tracked changes, and away it went. These files, I've been using tracked changes, and there are so fracking many of them it just isn't funny.

Can you turn "on" your Show/Hide option and see if there is anything that
would maybe be hidden that is causing these no spaces?

Yes to the first two questions. Don't know about the third.

Do you have a locally-installed printer driver? Is it set as the Windows
default printer? Is your print spooler on Automatic?
