TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Some time ago now, when work was quiet, I did a QA course at college and I always remember what the lecturers said about ISO 9000 - it wasn't a quality standard! It had nothing directly to do with standards and was all about consistency - if you had it and produced wonderful products or crap products then that's what you'd consistently produce! The whole thing that a lot of companies didn't get (want?) was that it was a process - ideally you documented what you did and then reviewed it. Was the quality good? Customers happy? Etc.
You then updated your procedures accordingly - it should be a continual process of review/improve... Too often it was a matter of we're accredited so that's it!
