Hi,
I've been using Linux and open source software for over six years now.
Mainstream open-source applications like Firefox and Openoffice
usually work well and get the job done. You can get terrific blogs and
websites running with a few clicks in Wordpress.
For other applications it greatly depends on the tasks at hand. Doing
basic image editing works fine with the Gimp, but you might find it
uncomfortable for bigger tasks. In a sense, open source is not
different from other vendors: you might find applications that do
exactly what you need, you might have to tweak them around a bit to
accomplish certain things, or in certain cases you must simply
conclude that a particular task is not really feasible with only
open-source tools, or not within reasonable efforts (can't think of
any examples right now though). Support is also similar, some
applications have highly responsive and helpful developers and user
communities, while others ... less so.
That said, I'm a happy user of open source, and just love working with
Docbook :)
Regards,
Robert
