Let's leave aside, for the moment, those few... those lucky[?]
few techwriters who ever actually get in the same room with
their audience (or on the other end of an e-mail exchange,
for that matter...).

Is your audience actually "specified" with any degree of
accuracy (and how do you know), and does it stay specified
for any longer than it takes to blink?

Oh, wait. Richard seems to have addressed the same question.
