I've been doing this for several years.
I also use selected endorsement snippets of in the body of my cover letter
to introduce subsequent paragraphs, each pertaining to some aspect of the
posted job requirements. I'm not sure that this has helped, though, in that
I've only had one interview in the past 2-1/2 years.
