You got that right. A company that doesn't care about documentation
quality probably wouldn't hire you or me as tech writers; there are
cheaper alternatives.
On the other hand, some companies don't *know* what makes documentation
good, but they do care about getting it (instead of what they've got).
And on the third hand (alien alert!), there are always objective,
measurable differences between gold and manure. You can't always say the
same for documentation.

True, if a company thinks gold is supposed to be squishy, brown and
stinky, who are we to argue? They'll be happy to receive exactly what
they pay for.
