Well, you guys sparked my interest enough to prompt me to drag out my January 1973 U.S. Government Printing Office Style Manual (it was old when I was using it back in the 80s).

From Section 2, Type Composition, Leading and Spacing 2.40, "To conform with trade practice, a single justification space (close spacing) will be used between sentences. This applies to all types of composition."

There you have it, right there in the government Bible ;-) .
