I believe the certificate helps. If nothing else, it demonstrates that the holder has the discipline to complete the program.

With 25 years of prior experience and good references, I think your
biggest areas to work on are updating whatever technical knowledge you
have/had in the fields you were writing in and getting updated on
current practices. I don't think that getting the certificates would
help all that much..
