I spent 18 years in interior Alaska where 50 below Januaries were the
norm..and I heated the house with wood. I drove a Landcruiser with no
power steering. That and the fact I was a single parent helped me
convince the University to allow me to take classes (and later work) on
the really rough days out of the house where all I had was dialup. There
is nothing like uploading a huge file at 14.4K. I at least had two phone
lines, because of those files.
