Framemaker vs. Flare for PDFs

Framemaker advantages over Flare when creating PDFs:

- automatic update of text insets (most comparable Flare feature is
External Resources; workaround is Global Project Linking)

- bookmarks can automatically be collapsed except for top level (Flare
is fully expanded, looks unprofessional)

- cross-references between PDFs

- document compare / change tracking markup (Flare's review features
require separate application with licenses for all reviewers)

- image hyperlinks (feature exists in Flare but is not generated in PDF)

- keyboard shortcut for nonbreaking hyphen (workaround possible)

- named destinations (feature exists in Flare but is not generated in PDF)

- set image DPI (workaround: use third-party image editor)

I haven't found any advantages to Flare if your only deliverable is
PDF. It is very nice to be able to edit the .html or .xml files in a
text editor to fix problems, but on the other hand I've rarely had to
export .mif from Framemaker.
