IBM used Information Developer. You developed the information used by the customer from data collected from various sources. Engineers and programmers didn't give you that information. They gave you data. You had to create information from that data.

McDonnell Douglas used Technical Data Engineers. Again, you took technical data from various sources, and created the information that went to the customer.

A few years ago, I started calling myself a "Documentationalist," as a
joke. It's a conversation-starter.

"Technical Writer" does seem best, but "Information Liaison" may have
potential.
