Any literal person can write, that's true. The question is, can you add value to the project? At least in software, and probably in all engineering projects, the essence of the work is information management. Documentation is just one range of the information spectrum. Everybody on the project is an information professional, tech writers included. If you add value to the project, you will get the recognition you deserve.
