I wonder if anyone's done an academic study recently to compare the
functional knowledge of basic grammar and spelling in the UK with that
in the Commonwealth and former colonies. (The study would have to
account for whether the non-British follow their own rules, as opposed
to following the British rules.)
I've heard a lot of anecdotes about this, but someone must have actually
studied it!

I'm certain the Queen disapproves of the way we rebels across the pond
mangle the language. In fact, as an American, I am often shocked (and
dismayed!) at the lack of even a functional knowledge of basic grammar
and spelling here in the States! (But it has kept me happily gathering
