Actually, I think people who are not even thinking about hiring can be good
prospects. They may not perceive a problem or be aware that there is someone
like you who can help them solve it. The sales process involves meeting
needs, and sometimes customers are acutely aware of these needs, and
sometimes not.
Again, the problem need not be in the quality of their existing docs, and
even if it were, I'm not suggesting that one brashly and sarcastically call
up the hiring manager, who may or may not be a writer, and say that their
docs stink. It could be a problem that companies in that industry commonly
face, or finding ways to save costs or localize or meet regulatory
requirements, or experience working with startups who don't have writers on
staff, or experience working with international companies, or.... Being
proactive in proposing a means to solve these problems will get more
business than waiting for the phone to ring.
