David Harrison asked whether "Machine Translation of Simplified English
offers a realistic alternative...(in)...a situation where volume of sales of
our product in some countries is simply too low to warrant expensive human
translation. One option may be to retrain one or two Technical Authors to
re-write our documents in Simplified English.. .(to)... bridge the gap for
users who don't use English as their main language and that machine
translation will give sufficient quality for users with no knowledge of
English."

David:
Mike Unwalla's TechScribe blog has reviewed different versions of Simplified
English and tests of different types of machine translation. Although he is
in the UK, he has reviewed a lot of books and other resources from both
sides of the Atlantic having to do with minimizing translation costs. I'd
suggest that you check out his web site and Technical writing newsletter
articles at http://www.techscribe.co.uk/index.htm.
