TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
One disadvantage is that certification from a school matters somewhat. Certification from an entity that isn't known outside tech writer circles would matter much less.

The only disadvantage that I see is the several hundred dollars I would have to fork over that wouldn't go toward my mortgage or end up in my IRA.

The same is true of being a medical practitioner or an engineer. Still,
who would you rather employer a certified doctor/engineer over an
uncertified one?
The onus, clearly, is on the certifying body to get the training
certification right. In other industries, this usually encompasses a
basis of academic knowledge combined with proven on-the-job skills. That
said, I can't think of an industry with a certification program where it
disadvantages either the employer or the practionner.
