Allow me to disagree with you on that. Former tech writer Richard Robinson's late father graduated from Harvard with a degree in philosophy. The year was roughly 1933. The great depression. Somehow he landed a job at a machine shop. (Perhaps they had never heard of philosophy.)

Now this was back when one might actually find something in philosophy that was still connected to reality as it is, as opposed to what you get now, which is probably reality as it ain't.

So on Rick's dad's first day at the shop, he put philosophy to work.

"You'll be learning from Harry, here," says the boss." Harry's busy working at some sort of machine.

Rick's dad says, "I'd rather learn from that fellow over there," pointing a someone a couple of benches away.

"What's the difference to you, who you learn from?" the boss says.

"That fellow over there has all his fingers."

Rick's dad was fond of telling that story, and wiggling his ten fingers in the air. "Count 'em!"
